The Virginia Beach Kendo and Iaido Club was created in early 2005 and led by Jonathan Anderson. He had trained in Kendo and Muso Shinden Ryu Iaido under Jimmy Lovell while stationed as a Marine at Camp Lejeune. When he moved back to Virginia Beach, he realized that there was no South East U.S. Kendo Federation (SEUSKF) Kendo or Iaido in the Hampton Roads area. That being the case, in order to continue to train in these arts, he would have to bring them to the area.
Starting the group on a 20'x33' deck he built in his backyard for this purpose, the group would meet once a week on Sundays from 10 am to 12 pm, weather permitting. In 2006, the group was "adopted" by a dojo in Cherrydale, SC. This was helpful as it gave them a dojo to travel to and allow them to take advantage of their guidance.
Anyone interested in these classical Japanese sword arts, please contact Jonathan Anderson at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Classes are currently held on Saturdays from 1:00pm to 3:00pm.
