Flexibility, Versatility and Adaptability are extremely important with any martial artist and athlete. Being disillusioned that your coach or instructor's skill will somehow be absorbed into your toolbox is not really how to absorb what is useful and discard what is not.
The late Bruce Lee's teachings in this respect allows us to find what is truly our own technique and discover what abilities suit us and not others. If you could do a spinning back hook kick, that does not mean someone else can do it with the same look and feel as you do.
