Getting Ready for Martial Arts Testing
There are many ways to getting ready for martial arts testing. Open mat and right after class are popular choices here at Impact Martial Arts Academy. From the students of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai Kickboxing and Filipino Arts, it’s nice to see everyone leveraging each other’s knowledge as testing draws near. It not only shows that you care about your growth and achieving excellence, but it reenforces our growth environment where you grow yourself and others. But sometimes there are advice seekers that look for more options on how to positively influence their development. Here are a few tips about how to maximize your readiness before you are up for demonstration:
- Take advantage of getting a copy of your test list or combination. The earlier you get a copy, the earlier you can work on details. When you know what it is ahead of time, the details and exercises in class will make more of an impression on you. The installation of the benefits will have a much stronger effect.
- Ask questions in class. If you are unsure about a technique or detail, bring it up. It is the instructor’s job to answer your questions. We are all problem solvers. Showing techniques is just a small part of what they do. Tap into a resource that is literally standing in front of you who is ready to pass on what was given to them through the martial arts.
- Rome was not build in a day so too is your valuable growth. Avoid being overwhelmed about how vast the arts are. If we all agree that discipline cannot be rushed, then let’s just enjoy the process. There are many little things along the way we can stop to appreciate its full value. When that is experienced, we tend to share and spread its worth. It is a gift that keeps on giving.
- Look at testing as a stepping stone; not the finish of the race. Example: If you are a white belt, it is logical to not be at black belt performance between your first day and your first test. As you take each step towards your goals, know that there are milestones that you will cross. Every once in a while, you’ll look back at how far you’ve come and you’ll be surprised how much you’ve accomplished. You have a choice on what kind of story you will tell when you receive your black belt. Its either one of these two. Which one would you pick for yourself? How do you want to write another chapter in your book.

Story 2
Once upon a time, I started training. Every class I went to had me face challenges. It made me aware on how to face challenges outside of class.
