While some of us were cleaning up the office we just built, something unexpected happened. One of the bushes outside our front door was smoking and was on fire. Thankfully, we noticed it just in time, called the fire department, and we put the fire out while we waiting for the professionals. The fire department came quickly within 10 to 15 minutes of the call and were able to secure the scene. So with the exception of some badly burned leaves and branches, no one was hurt and there was no major damage.
We were so glad that we just happened to be at the school when the bush was on fire. Plus, thank goodness that our training and planning prepared us for such an unexpected time as this. What if we didn’t notice the smoke coming up from the bush? What would have happened if we didn’t have our fire extinguisher near our front desk? What if we didn’t have an emergency response plan? What could have happened in those minutes waiting for the fire department?
And while we are grateful no one and nothing was hurt, it got us thinking about everyone else and their fire response planning and training. Do they have fire extinguishers? Do they know how to use them? Where are they in their house? Do they have a plan for emergency situations like a house fire? How often do they practice it?
With that said, please take time to find the fire extinguisher in your home and at work and get familiar with it. Then, ask your family and co-workers some good questions that can help all of you plan to be prepared and safe for whatever happens.
We want nothing more than people to be safe and secure and one of the best ways to do that is to train, plan, and prepare. So plan your work and work your plan. Then, practice it often so you know when the time comes to use it, you can trust your training and you will be prepared and willing to do what needs to be done.
